Scientists discover the first diplodocus ever found outside North America

Paleontology News

Paleontologists have identified a 150-million-year-old sauropod fossil discovered in Spain as the first confirmed specimen of the genus Diplodocus found outside of North America. Measuring approximately 25 meters in length, the specimen was identified by examining unique anatomical features within its caudal vertebrae that correlate with known North American Diplodocus species. This finding challenges previous assumptions regarding the geographical distribution of Late Jurassic dinosaurs, indicating that these giant sauropods were able to traverse continents, likely facilitated by ephemeral land bridges. The discovery provides critical evidence for intercontinental movement during the Jurassic period and suggests a more complex dispersal pattern for these megaherbivores than previously understood.
